Vertical Day is coming this Wednesday.

We expect a dozen of the Huck PAC endorsed candidates to participate. Each of them has been asked to send us their thoughts on the issues that matter most to them. We will add these posts to the our special homepage at www.huckpac.com from 12PM-12AM ET.

I am also hoping to add 8 special guests. Today I am asking for your ideas America on the following issues:

-How would you control spending in Washington?

-How would you make America energy independent?

-What would you do to improve our education system?

-What would you do to improve our health care system?

-What sort of tax reform do you think America needs to boost our economy?

-What steps would you take to promote conservation and good stewardship of the environment?

If you have an idea or a solution to one of these issues, please submit them here. Please keep your blog posts to no longer than 6-8 paragraphs if possible. Please provide your name and where you are from with your submission. We will choose 8 responses from the ideas submitted and include them on our special Vertical Day page alongside our participating candidates.

Your ideas are important. The way forward on many of these issues will also need to come from outside Washington and our state governments. They will come from individuals making a difference on a local level in their hometown, school system or in their own home and with their family.

So if you have an answer to one of the questions above and want to participate in the process please submit your answer here.

Thanks for all you do and please remember Vertical Day is Wednesday.

Mike Huckabee comes to the rescue...

What a great week it was for superheroes.

Certainly getting the most pub was "The Dark Knight," the new Batman movie being hailed as a modern classic in which the late Heath Ledger's depiction of the Joker is being described as Oscar-worthy. And, at the risk of falling prey to the gonzo marketing of the Warner Brothers PR machine, "The Dark Knight" was spectacular entertainment and Ledger's performance was one of those that makes you stop what you're doing just to watch everything he is doing onscreen. A creepy performance made even more so by the inclusion of the sound of his licking his chops incessantly. The movie was easily the entertainment high point of the year so far, imho, and the character of The Joker should forever be retired.

As breathtaking as these two hours of entertainment were, what stole last week's show for me was what happened in Midland. As sad as the news of Tony Snow's passing was, what was really remarkable was the reaction of Mike Huckabee.

As you probably know very well, Snow, the former White House Press Secretary, died of cancer last week. He was the scheduled speaker for this year's "An Evening With ..." fundraiser benefiting Centers for Children and Families. There was more buzz about Tony's appearance than any of the other speakers the organization has had since Henry Winkler. People were really, really looking forward to seeing Tony.

Within 48 hours after his death, Centers had inked a replacement: Former Arkansas governor and GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee stepped to the front, volunteering to fill Snow's slot. Huckabee commands a larger appearance fee than Snow, but agreed to do the benefit for Centers at the same amount Snow was to have been paid, and that is the mark of a real person of integrity. Very impressive. Very quality.

What would Tony Snow have talked about at the Centers fundraiser? We'll certainly never be able to say with absolute certainty, but we have a pretty good idea. A friend sent this to me the other day. It contains no religious or political overtones. It is simply one of the best commencement addresses I have ever read. You should read it, and you should pass it on to your children and friends. It sheds an ample amount of light on the kind of man Tony Snow was.

There are still tickets available to hear Gov. Huckabee, who is a gifted speaker. Call 570-1084 for ticket info.

Janet Huckabee appointed to panel serving returning troops
link to original source

Former first lady Janet Huckabee has been appointed by Governor Beebe to serve on a panel studying ways to help troops adjust to life at home when they return to the state. Beebe, a Democrat, announced today that the wife of his Republican predecessor, former Governor Mike Huckabee, will serve on the Arkansas Yellow Ribbon Task Force. Beebe's office said the task force will first meet at the state Capitol on July 29th.

The appointment of Janet Huckabee to the panel comes after officials with the Governor's Mansion said they removed her name from an entrance to a banquet hall at the mansion. Commission officials said the plastic lettering was removed for "aesthetic reasons." A plaque outside the building still refers to the hall as "Janet M. Huckabee Hall," which it was named two years ago.

The commission overseeing the mansion also voted to no longer name rooms after people at the mansion.

Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said her appointment to the panel had nothing to do with the flap over the removal of her name from the mansion. The former first lady works as the American Red Cross Arkansas program manager for services to military families. DeCample said Janet Huckabee said she wanted to be part of the task force, and it made sense to have the Red Cross' veterans liaison on the panel.

Huckabee and group pay respects to Rwandan genocide victims

Cindy McCain, the wife of US Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, Saturday paid respect to victims of the 1994 Genocide of Tutsis at the Kigali Genocide Memorial site in Gisozi.

Mrs. McCain was accompanied by Mike Huckabee, who contested with her husband for the Republican presidential nomination, are part of a 40-plus delegation led by former Senate Majority Leaders;Tom Daschle and Bill Frist.

The group laid wreaths at the memorial site where close to 300,000 victims of the Genocide have been put to rest. They also visited a coffee project in Nyandungu.

The delegation is part of the non-partisan ONE campaign, an organization that uses grass-roots efforts to pressure world leaders to address poverty and preventable diseases.

While in the country, the group will visit various US funded projects in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Huckabee will headline October fundraiser in PA

Mike Huckabee, the Baptist minister-turned-politician whom evangelicals are pushing to be U.S. Sen. John McCain's running mate, is coming to Lancaster County — less than a month before the election.

The former Arkansas governor is scheduled to speak at a Pennsylvania Family Institute banquet being held at the Lancaster Host Resort on Oct. 11, said the conservative group's director, Michael Geer.

"Governor Huckabee, even prior to his entrance into politics and as a private citizen, has always shown and expressed concern about the same sorts of issues as the Pennsylvania Family Institute — the well-being of the family, the sanctity of marriage, being pro-life," Geer said.

"I'm very confident he'll speak about some of the things a Pennsylvania Family Institute audience will be concerned about," said Geer. "We're getting quite a lot of interest. We're getting calls from all across the state."

Earlier in the day, Geer's group is holding a luncheon for Huckabee in Chester County. Tickets to that event, being held at noon at the Mendenhall Inn, Hotel & Conference Center in Mendenhall, are also $50 per person.

Huckabee had sought the Republican nomination for president earlier this year, but withdrew from the race in March when it became clear that McCain was the frontrunner.

Huckabee remains popular among religious conservatives, so popular that earlier this month a group of evangelical leaders meeting in Denver, Colo., agreed to send a letter to McCain encouraging him to consider Huckabee as his choice for vice president.

Huckabee to speak at GOP picnic
link to original source

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee will be the keynote speaker at the 13th annual Old Fashioned Family Picnic of U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson on Aug. 9, according to a news release from the congresswoman's office Friday.

"Governor Huckabee is a champion for rural America," said Emerson in the release. "His presidential campaign inspired people across the country."

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, is an ordained Baptist minister and a regular contributor to FOX News. After ending his own presidential bid earlier this year, Huckabee has been working for the campaign of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Emerson said the picnic, a traditional election-year kickoff, usually draws around 500 people but that she hoped to draw as many as 200 more than usual because of Huckabee's appearance.
Emerson said she has invited the statewide Republican ticket to the event. Local elected officials and candidates have been invited as well.

"This year's election is extremely important, and I think people will enjoy hearing about his experience on the campaign trail and outlook for the November election," said Emerson about Huckabee.

Doors at the Arena Building in Cape Girardeau will open at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 9, and the program will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Evangelicals urge McCain to make Huckabee VP choice
link to original source

More than 90 evangelical leaders met in Denver this month and decided to support Sen. John McCain as the presidential candidate who most shares their values.

Participants in the meeting agreed they are concerned about issues like immigration and gun rights. But they determined opposing abortion and gay marriage are so central, they believed they have no choice but to support McCain.

“He would advance those values in a much more significant way than Sen. Barack Obama who, in our view, would decimate those values,” said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University’s law school, who spearheaded the meeting.

Participants also reached a consensus that they would send a letter to McCain, R-Ariz., encouraging him to consider former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as his choice for vice president.

“It’s not a demand; it’s a request,” said Staver, who couldn’t say when McCain would be contacted about Huckabee, a former Southern Baptist pastor who resonated with some evangelical voters during the Republican primaries.

The meeting included conservative Christians from various sectors of evangelicalism, including African-Americans, Hispanics and younger evangelicals. Tim and Beverly LaHaye, the couple known respectively for their roles in the Left Behind book series and Concerned Women for America, were there, as were Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly, former Christian Coalition president Don Hodel and Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values, an Ohio organization affiliated with Focus on the Family.

But one person not invited was one of the movement’s most prominent voices, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who recently blasted Obama’s politics and his theology and previously said he would not vote for McCain.

“I didn’t want this meeting to be centered on a personality,” said Staver, who added Dobson was working on a book.

Burress reported there was agreement to support McCain, but there were differing views about strategy. “There’s no question, everybody was on the same page that Obama was not an option,” he said.

Burress, whose Ohio group is preparing 2 million bulletin inserts for 10,000 churches about the two candidates’ stances, predicted Obama’s efforts to reach evangelicals will fall flat.

“The only evangelicals that he’s going to win over are those who have never read the Bible,” said Burress, who was one of a handful of conservative leaders who met with McCain on June 26 in Cincinnati.

McCain, who recently met with evangelists Billy Graham and Franklin Graham, has been urged by some evangelical leaders to increase his outreach to them. But the sentiment at the meeting was that evangelicals must speak up for him.

Evangelicals are trying to unify after a “fractious primary season” when no consensus candidate emerged as an evangelical favorite, Staver said.

“We will not allow our values to be hijacked by any political party, and we will not allow politics to divide us,” said Staver, founder of the Liberty Counsel, a conservative law firm.

The state of New Hampshire is famous for it's official motto: "Live Free or Die".  But now that same state is accepting free oil from Hugo Chavez, the dictatorial president of Venezuela.  I guess that they are willing to die for their freedom in New Hampshire, but don't expect them to freeze!

beliefnet.com: Misunderestimating Huckabee again
link to original source

The political prognostication website 538.com explains that Obama's supporters are more enthusiastic than McCains and suggests that the solution for McCain might be to put Mike Huckabee on the ticket to rev up evangelicals.

"It's certainly the simplest and most direct way for McCain to lock down the support and enthusiasm of that desperately-needed evangelical organizing engine."

Meanwhile, I've heard Democrats gleefully hoping (not praying) for a Huckabee selection because they think he'd be easy to caricature as a right wing yahoo.
Those who think Huckabee would help the ticket and those who think he would hurt both seem to be misunderstanding Huckabee's strengths and weaknesses.

Frirst, let's remember that Huckabee was NOT embraced by the evangelical establishment until late in the game because they viewed him as too liberal on too many things (mostly spending and crime). Rush Limbaugh didn't like him, nor did The Wall Street Journal types, nor did many other evangelical leaders. But he was pretty popular with rank and file evangelicals.

Huckabee is a transitional figure in the evangelical world, and possibly a transformational one. As a strong pro-life politician and former Baptist preacher, he is a familiar and not-loathed figure among the evangelical old guard. Beyond that, his emphasis on Christianity as an uplifting rather than judgmental faith taps into the zeitgeist of the New Envagelicals. Younger evangelicals in particular have become convinced that leading a Bible-based, Christ-centered life might involve helping the poor and the environment, in addition to battling abortion. In tone and substance, Huckabee fits these evangelicals better than any Religious Right leader ever has.

In other words, he may not appeal to James Dobson but he may appeal to rank and file evangelicals, and maybe even Obamagelicals.

My big question is this: the evangelical hierarchy may not control all the votes (as we saw in the primaries) but they do have a disproportionate impact on the evangelical volunteer apparatus. So would Huckabee be able to translate his popularity with ordinary eangelicals into votes for McCain if the evangelical leadership a) hates McCain and b) only sort of kind of likes Huckabee?

Full disclosure: Huckabee has signed on as a commentator with Fox News, which is owned by News Corp, which also owns Beliefnet.

Must-reads for conservatives:

A "nation of whiners"?  Well, are we?
by Austin Hill   link to original source

It’s always awkward when presidents and candidates are embarrassed by the words and behavior of their own friends.

And such was the case when McCain supporter and surrogate speaker Phil Gramm stated earlier this week that America has become a nation of “whiners.”

Speaking with a small group of media professionals, the former U.S. Senator (and former Presidential Candidate) from Texas spoke about current economic conditions, saying "you've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession."

He went on to note that, despite all the rhetoric about hard times in America, our economy still produced a growth rate of approximately 1 percent last quarter. In the face of all the gloom about losing jobs to India and China, illegal immigrants taking jobs away from U.S. citizens, housing and credit problems, and record oil prices, Gramm pointed out that America is still enjoying a major boom in export business. "We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline…"

Now arguably, one could say that Gramm’s comments point towards the profound reality of the psychological underpinning to people’s economic behavior. If people “think” and “feel” as though times are bad, then they’ll behave, economically and otherwise, as though times are bad.

But that’s not how Gramm’s comments were received. More accurately, he was perceived as being insensitive and “out of touch” about the real hardship and pain that many Americans are facing, and was believed to have been speaking pejoratively about the American people.

McCain himself quickly rebuked Gramm, his longtime friend and the man that he supported for the presidency back in 1996. “Phil Gramm doesn’t speak for me, I speak for me” McCain said sternly. He went on to explain that a laid-off worker or a mother struggling to pay for a child's education "isn't suffering from a mental recession" - - in other words, the suffering is real, and so are our nation’s economic woes.

But lost in the midst of this little fiasco was a question that begs an answer: is Phil Gramm right? Has the United States of America, on some level, become a nation of whiners?

An examination of the rhetoric from this entire presidential campaign cycle would suggest that, to some degree, America is, in some collective sense, inclined toward whining right now. The candidates aren’t whining themselves, so much, but their ideas and proposals suggest that they are playing to an audience of whiners. And that’s not good for anybody - - not the whiners, nor for the rest of us.

Consider the Democratic Primary races. Clinton and Obama both took the “hatred of successful people” sensibilities to new high’s (or new “lows,” depending on how you view it). This was especially odd for Hillary Clinton, who, along with her husband, spent the entire previous decade positioning herself as a “New Democrat” and “Centrist,” and the kind of Democrat who can embrace free trade, upwardly mobile voters, and so forth.

But you would have never known that listening to Hillary and Obama earlier this year. When campaigning in the rust belt states where factory jobs have declined, Obama and Clinton blamed free trade for people’s pain, and vowed to “review” - - that is, deconstruct - - N.A.F.T.A. - - as though eliminating free trade would be the one thing needed to pacify people’s whining.

Obama and Clinton have also both spent a good bit of this year lashing out at “corporate America,” and “fat cat executives” - - another sure indication of whining in America. Why would anybody who wasn’t a whiner be obsessed with the salary of a CEO? And why would anyone at all be offended that a corporation earned a profit?

Corporate profits keep millions of Americans employed and line the retirement portfolios of millions of investors, and executives who manage such corporations deserve the compensation that the corporations’ board of directors have determined as “fair.” But don’t try to tell that to the presidential candidates. There’s to much political gain to be enjoyed by promising to “reign-in executive pay,” and to “tax corporations” even further.

So what if a presidential candidate shot back at this nonsense with some seriously insensitive but painfully truthful “straight talk?” To his credit, McCain has done this to some degree. Even while rebuking Gramm in the economically challenged state of Michigan last week, McCain still had the courage that he believes in the benefits of free trade, despite how unpopular that position might be.

That’s a good start. Now let’s imagine McCain rebuking Obama more succinctly. When Obama laments “rich greedy corporations” (oil corporations or any other), how about challenging Obama on the relative merits of a corporation that continually loses money (can someone say “General Motors?”)? And when Obama vows to get tough on “greedy” and “unscrupulous” mortgage lenders, and to “protect homeowners,” what if somebody - - McCain or someone else - - stood up and sated the obvious: Americans need to be better stewards of their own money! Americans who borrowed more than they should have, should not now look to the government to “fix their problem.” Oh, and by the way, 95% of us homeowners are paying our bills on time, so let’s not limit the scope of opportunity for 95% of us, just so we can coddle the other 5%.

I’d love to hear some of these ideas from Mr. McCain. But they would likely beget more whining.

15 things you should know about "The Race"
by Michell Malkin   link to original source

Only in America could critics of a group called "The Race" be labeled racists. Such is the triumph of left-wing identity chauvinists, whose aggressive activists and supine abettors have succeeded in redefining all opposition as "hate."

Both Barack Obama and John McCain will speak this week in San Diego at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, the Latino organization whose name is Spanish for, yes, "The Race." Can you imagine Obama and McCain paying homage to a group of white people who called themselves that? No matter. The presidential candidates and the media have legitimized "The Race" as a mainstream ethnic lobbying group and marginalized its critics as intolerant bigots. The unvarnished truth is that the group is a radical ethnic nationalist outfit that abuses your tax dollars and milks PC politics to undermine our sovereignty.

Here are 15 things you should know about "The Race":

15. "The Race" supports driver's licenses for illegal aliens.

14."The Race" demands in-state tuition discounts for illegal alien students that are not available to law-abiding U.S. citizens and law-abiding legal immigrants.

13. "The Race" vehemently opposes cooperative immigration enforcement efforts between local, state and federal authorities.

12. "The Race" opposes a secure fence on the southern border.

11. "The Race" joined the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in a failed lawsuit attempt to prevent the feds from entering immigration information into a key national crime database -- and to prevent local police officers from accessing the data.

10. "The Race" opposed the state of Oklahoma's tough immigration-enforcement-first laws, which cut off welfare to illegal aliens, put teeth in employer sanctions and strengthened local-federal cooperation and information sharing.

9. "The Race" joined other open-borders, anti-assimilationists and sued to prevent Proposition 227, California's bilingual education reform ballot initiative, from becoming law.

8. "The Race" bitterly protested common-sense voter ID provisions as an "absolute disgrace."

7. "The Race" has consistently opposed post-9/11 national security measures at every turn.

6. Former "Race" president Raul Yzaguirre, Hillary Clinton's Hispanic outreach adviser, said this: "U.S. English is to Hispanics as the Ku Klux Klan is to blacks." He was referring to U.S. English, the nation's oldest, largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. "The Race" also pioneered Orwellian open-borders Newspeak and advised the Mexican government on how to lobby for illegal alien amnesty while avoiding the terms "illegal" and "amnesty."

5. "The Race" gives mainstream cover to a poisonous subset of ideological satellites, led by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan (MEChA). The late GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood rightly characterized the organization as "a radical racist group ... one of the most anti-American groups in the country, which has permeated U.S. campuses since the 1960s, and continues its push to carve a racist nation out of the American West."

4. "The Race" is currently leading a smear campaign against staunch immigration enforcement leaders and has called for TV and cable news networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves -- in addition to pushing for Fairness Doctrine policies to shut up their foes. The New York Times reported that current "Race" president Janet Murguia believes "hate speech" should "not be tolerated, even if such censorship were a violation of First Amendment rights."

3. "The Race" sponsors militant ethnic nationalist charter schools subsidized by your public tax dollars (at least $8 million in federal education grants). The schools include Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz., the Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz., Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn., and La Academia Semillas del Pueblo in Los Angeles, whose principal inveighed: "We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain ... ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."

2. "The Race" has perfected the art of the PC shakedown at taxpayer expense, pushing relentlessly to lower home loan standards for Hispanic borrowers, reaping millions in federal "mortgage counseling" grants, seeking special multimillion-dollar earmarks and partnering with banks that do business with illegal aliens.

1. "The Race" thrives on ethnic supremacy -- and the elite sheeple's unwillingness to call it what it is. As historian Victor Davis Hanson observes: "[The] organization's very nomenclature 'The National Council of La Raza' is hate speech to the core. Despite all the contortions of the group, Raza (as its Latin cognate suggests) reflects the meaning of 'race' in Spanish, not 'the people' -- and that's precisely why we don't hear of something like 'The National Council of the People,' which would not confer the buzz notion of ethnic, racial and tribal chauvinism."

The fringe is the center. The center is the fringe. Viva La Raza.
